Trying to Reach Everyone? Here’s Why You’re Losing Clients (and How to Fix It).
The Power of Niching Down: How Focus Fuels Success
We’ve all heard the saying, “The riches are in the niches.” But let’s be honest.
Niching down can feel scary.
What if you alienate potential clients?
What about the revenue opportunities you might leave on the table?
These thoughts stopped me in my tracks when I first started my coaching and consulting business.
My Struggle with Niching Down
When I launched my business, I focused on helping wellness, fitness, and service-based entrepreneurs. It made sense since I’d spent over 20 years working in this space.
But doubt crept in.
I started wondering: Should I go broader? Am I reaching enough people?
The temptation to expand my scope felt overwhelming. I worried I was limiting myself by staying so specific. But then I remembered something I often tell my clients:
If you’re trying to talk to everyone, you’re talking to no one.
I had to take a spoonful of my own advice.
Why Niching Down Matters
When you niche down, you’re not losing opportunities. You’re gaining clarity.
Think about it. When someone sees your messaging, they should immediately feel like it’s written just for them. That’s how you connect. That’s how you stand out.
Here’s the truth: nobody can be an expert in everything.
For example, I wouldn’t take on a client in e-commerce. It’s not my area of expertise and I wouldn’t serve them well.
But service-based entrepreneurs? Wellness and fitness professionals? That’s where I shine.
When you focus on the people you know best, you deliver better results. And better results mean happier clients, stronger referrals, and sustainable growth.
The Niching Exercise
I’ve walked countless people through this exact process.
It starts with a question: Who do you help best?
When I ask, many people say, “Women,” or “Anyone who needs help.”
That’s too broad. Let’s get specific.
Is it women in their 40s?
Postnatal women?
Teens?
Menopausal women?
The world is big, and opportunities are endless. The key is to own your space.
For example, if someone is posting workouts for teen girls, that’s not for me. But a program designed for perimenopausal women or empty nesters? Now, that catches my attention.
When you niche down, your ideal client doesn’t just notice you. They see themselves in your message.
The Shift in Mindset
Niching down isn’t about what you lose; it’s about what you gain.
You gain:
Clarity: Your message is sharp and relatable.
Connection: You resonate deeply with the right audience.
Confidence: You know exactly who you serve and how to help them.
Are You Ready to Niche Down?
If you’re stuck in your business or thinking about starting one, ask yourself:
Who do I serve best?
What problems am I uniquely equipped to solve?
How can I tailor my message to that audience?
The fear of niching down is natural. But the rewards far outweigh the risks.
If you’re ready to figure out who you’re meant to serve and how to craft a business that resonates, let’s talk.
